What is a doula? How can one help me?
A doula is a trained non-medical labor assistant that provides both physical and emotional support during all stages of labor. Studies have shown that women who have a doula assist them during labor have shorter labors, less interventions, and reduced cesarean section rates. For more information please read here.

I can support you in a number of ways. My support is directed by you- and what your needs are. Here are some of the ways that I can assist you:
- Prior to birth, I can answer questions about childbirth and help you establish your birth plan. I will work with you in achieving your labor goals by providing information and helping you formulate questions to ask your doctor or midwife.
- During labor I can provide emotional support by encouraging you and your family. This is especially helpful when labor does not go as expected or you are having an un-medicated childbirth.
- I provide physical support with massage, cold/heat application, and other soothing measures. Having an extra set of arms to support you can give your partner a much needed break.
- I can suggest different positions and breathing techniques during labor.
- I can provide practical support as well. Labor can last several hours, even for a second or later birth. I can provide support while your coach rests, goes to the restroom, or grabs a bite to eat. I can also run brief errands so they can remain at your side, such as bringing you water or blankets.
- After birth, I remain with you as long as a couple hours. This is directed by you- you may wish immediate privacy with your new family member. If you wish, I can assist with beginning breastfeeding. If your baby must be taken from the room (to the nursery or NICU, for example), I can remain with you while your partner stays with the baby.
